John,
You'll need to also consider the framerate of your final video and how long you want your final video to be.
Based on a 30fps video which runs for 60 seconds, according to http://www.pro-lapse.com you'll need to take 10 shots per minute, or one shot every 6 seconds.

Hi John!

I'm not sure the speed of the motion--how many inches per minute the water will rise, etc. If you figure that out, it might help you be more accurate with an interval and shutter speed. But given that you have at least 3hrs to shoot by your calculations, I think I'd figure out how long you want your finished clip to be, and your desired framerate, and work backwards from there. For example, a 3hr shoot played back in 1 minute at 30fps would be a 6 second interval, or 1800 shots. PhotoPills has a great calculator for this if you have an iPhone, or their website also has an online calculator: : http://www.photopills.com/calculators/timelapse I suspect there are several Android apps as well.

Sounds like a fun subject!

These vessels will be going out of dry dock at the end of August. I plan to do a time-lapse of the event. It will take about 90 minutes to flood the dry dock, and (I estimate) about another 60 - 90 minutes to move them to their moorings. Any suggestions on an optimal interval? Any other things I might need to consider?

Thank you.
